New Zealand Road Trip Itinerary — 7, 14, and 21 Day Routes

Pick up your rental car and spend two days in the adventure capital. Day 1: settle in, Skyline Gondola, Fergburger, lakefront walk. Day 2: Milford Sound day trip (full day, 3.5 hrs each way — the drive is half the experience). See our Queenstown guide for the full list.

Stay: 2 nights in Queenstown

Short drive over the Crown Range (New Zealand's highest sealed road — stop at the lookout) to Wanaka. Afternoon: Roy's Peak hike if you are fit (5-6 hrs return) or the easier Wanaka lakefront walk and That Wanaka Tree. Evening: Wanaka's smaller dining scene is more relaxed than Queenstown's.

Stay: 1 night in Wanaka

Drive through the Lindis Pass and the Mackenzie Country — tussock grassland and turquoise glacial lakes. Stop at Lake Pukaki for the iconic Mount Cook viewpoint. Afternoon: Hooker Valley Track (3 hrs return, easy, swing bridges to a glacial lake at the base of Mount Cook). This is one of the most beautiful short walks in New Zealand.

Stay: 1 night in Mount Cook village or Twizel

Stop at Lake Tekapo for the Church of the Good Shepherd (one of NZ's most photographed buildings) and the turquoise lake. If you stayed in Twizel, detour to the salmon farm for fresh salmon sashimi. Continue to Christchurch via the Canterbury Plains. Afternoon: explore the rebuilt Christchurch city center — the Cardboard Cathedral, Riverside Market, and the Avon River.

Stay: 1 night in Christchurch

Drive north along the coast to Kaikoura — one of the world's best places for whale watching. Book a whale watching tour (morning departures have the calmest seas) or a dolphin swimming encounter. The Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway is a free 3-hour coastal walk past fur seal colonies. Fresh crayfish from the roadside stalls is a must. See our Kaikoura whale watching guide.

Stay: 1 night in Kaikoura

Morning: one more Kaikoura activity if time allows (seal kayaking is excellent). Drive back to Christchurch for your flight. If your flight is late, detour through the Waipara wine region for a vineyard lunch — Pegasus Bay and Black Estate are standouts.

Pick up your car. Day 1: Sky Tower, Viaduct Harbour, Ponsonby Road for dinner. Day 2: Waiheke Island day trip (ferry from downtown, wine tasting, beaches). See our Auckland guide.

Drive south to Waitomo Caves (glowworm boat tour or black water rafting), then continue to Rotorua. Evening: Polynesian Spa hot pools overlooking Lake Rotorua.

Full day in Rotorua: Te Puia or Wai-O-Tapu geothermal areas (bubbling mud pools, geysers, colored hot springs), Redwoods Treewalk, and a Maori cultural evening with hangi feast. Browse our Rotorua tours.

Drive to Tongariro National Park. Afternoon: short walks around Whakapapa Village or the Taranaki Falls track (2 hrs return). Prepare for the Tongariro Crossing tomorrow — check weather forecast and book shuttle transport.

Full day on New Zealand's most famous day hike. Start early (shuttle pickup around 6-7 AM). The 19.4 km crossing takes 7-8 hours. You will be tired — have dinner booked nearby rather than driving afterward.

Drive to Wellington via the Desert Road (volcanic plateau with views of all three volcanoes). Wellington afternoon: Te Papa Museum (free, excellent — allow 2-3 hours), Cuba Street for coffee and food, and the cable car to the Botanic Garden. Evening: Wellington's craft beer and restaurant scene is the best in New Zealand.

Morning Interislander ferry across Cook Strait to Picton. The crossing passes through the Marlborough Sounds — stay on deck for this part. Drive 30 minutes to Blenheim for a Marlborough wine afternoon — sauvignon blanc country. Cloudy Bay, Brancott Estate, and Framingham are within a short drive of each other.

Day 9: Drive to Abel Tasman National Park (2 hrs). Half-day guided kayak or water taxi + walk along the coast. Day 10: Cross to the West Coast via Murchison and Reefton. Stop at Punakaiki Pancake Rocks (blowholes and layered limestone formations). Continue to Hokitika or Greymouth.

Drive south through podocarp rainforest to Franz Josef. Heli-hike on the glacier (the only way to walk on the ice now — the terminal face has retreated beyond foot access). Alternatively, the free Franz Josef Glacier Valley walk gets you close. Hot pools in the evening.

One of New Zealand's most dramatic drives — over the Haast Pass through native bush, past Thunder Creek Falls, and into the Mackenzie/Otago drylands. The landscape changes from temperate rainforest to tussock grassland in a single pass. Afternoon in Wanaka: lakefront, Puzzling World, or the start of Roy's Peak.

Day 13: Milford Sound day trip. Day 14: Queenstown adventure day — bungy, jet boat, wine tour, or just the gondola and a long lunch. See our Queenstown guide. Fly out of Queenstown.

Extra North Island Days

Day 3 addition: Hobbiton Movie Set (combine with Waitomo for a full day). Days 5-6: Coromandel Peninsula — Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, overnight in Whitianga or Hahei. Day 8: Cape Palliser day trip from Wellington — NZ's largest North Island fur seal colony and the Putangirua Pinnacles (Dimholt Road from LOTR). Gives you 10 North Island days total.

Extra South Island Days

Day 14: Kaikoura whale watching (add between Picton and Blenheim). Day 17: Mount Cook — Hooker Valley Track and stargazing (Aoraki Mackenzie is a Dark Sky Reserve). Days 19-20: Doubtful Sound overnight cruise (deeper, wilder, and quieter than Milford). Day 21: Glenorchy and Paradise Valley half-day before your flight. Rental Car Advice

Pick up and drop off in different cities (one-way rental) to avoid backtracking — Auckland to Queenstown or reverse is the classic route. One-way fees vary: some companies charge NZ$50-150, others include it in peak-season rates. Book 2-4 months ahead for summer (December-February). A compact car handles all sealed roads. You only need a 4WD for Skippers Canyon Road (and most rental agreements prohibit it there anyway).

When to Go

December-February: Peak summer, longest days (sunrise 6 AM, sunset 9 PM), best weather, highest prices. Book accommodation and popular activities 2-3 months ahead. March-April: Autumn colors, warm weather, fewer crowds — arguably the best time for a road trip. October-November: Spring, fewer tourists, lower prices, but more rain on the West Coast.
