Types of Tours

Great Rides

New Zealand's 23 Great Rides span both islands — purpose-built trails through mountains, forests, and heritage railways. Multi-day or single-stage options.

Mountain Biking

Rotorua's Whakarewarewa Forest is world-famous. Queenstown's Skyline and Christchurch's Port Hills add gravity-fed thrills.

E-Bike Tours

Cover more ground with electric assist. Popular in Marlborough wine country, Central Otago rail trail, and Wellington's hilly waterfront.

Self-Guided Bike Rental

Pick up a bike in any major town and explore at your own pace. Most rental shops include maps, helmets, and repair kits.

Where to Go

Rotorua

Bay of Plenty

Whakarewarewa Forest has 150+ km of single-track through redwoods and native bush. Beginner to expert, all in one forest.

Queenstown Trail

Otago

120 km of lakeside and river trails linking Queenstown, Arrowtown, and Gibbston Valley wineries. Mostly flat, family-friendly.

Otago Central Rail Trail

Otago

NZ's original Great Ride. 152 km along a historic railway through tussock-covered hills, stone bridges, and gold-rush towns.

Hauraki Rail Trail

Waikato

Past the Karangahake Gorge's gold-mining tunnels and across the Hauraki Plains. Flat, easy, and scenic.

Marlborough

South Island

Cycle between cellar doors on flat vineyard roads. Half-day wine-and-bike combos are the region's signature tour.

West Coast Wilderness Trail

West Coast

Rainforest, wetlands, and glacial rivers from Greymouth to Ross. True backcountry with eco-lodge stays.

Tips

Wear a Helmet

Helmets are legally required for all cyclists in New Zealand. Rental shops always include one — no exceptions.

Ride Left

New Zealand drives on the left. If you're sharing the road, stay left and use hand signals.

Book Shuttles for Point-to-Point

Most Great Rides are one-way. Trail shuttle services run daily in season — book in advance for peak weekends.

Check Trail Grades

DOC grades trails 1 (easiest) to 6 (expert). Don't attempt Grade 4+ without mountain biking experience and proper gear.
