Rotorua is built on top of an active geothermal field. The smell of hydrogen sulfide hits you within 5 minutes of arriving — locals call it the price of admission. Hell's Gate, Te Puia, and Wai-O-Tapu are the three main thermal parks, each with a different scale and pace: Wai-O-Tapu (Champagne Pool, Devil's Bath) is the most photogenic, Te Puia is the cultural center with a working Maori carving school, and Hell's Gate has the smaller-scale active mud pools and a working hot mud spa.
Most Rotorua tours we work with are full-day combinations: thermal park morning + Maori cultural evening (hangi feast and concert) is the standard pattern. The cultural experiences at Tamaki Maori Village and Mitai are the most-respected of the kind. If you're driving, plan for 3 days minimum to do the major sites; if you're on a tour bus, 1 day is enough for a thermal-park-and-hangi combo.
