Hobbiton & Lord of the Rings Tours in New Zealand: The Complete Guide
Peter Jackson filmed six Middle-earth movies across New Zealand between 1999 and 2014, and the country has never let anyone forget it. Most of the sets were dismantled — but one wasn't. Hobbiton, on a sheep farm near Matamata, was rebuilt in permanent materials for The Hobbit and left standing. It's now the most-visited paid attraction in the country, with around 650,000 visitors a year.
This guide covers how to do Hobbiton properly — tour options, prices, getting there, and what to actually expect — and then the other filming locations worth building a trip around, from Mount Doom to Edoras to the Wellington studios that made it all.
Hobbiton Movie Set
What it is
A working 1,250-acre sheep and cattle farm — the Alexander family's — where the Shire was built in 1999 for The Lord of the Rings, torn down, then rebuilt permanently in 2011 for The Hobbit. The set has 44 hobbit holes, the Party Tree, the mill, the double-arch stone bridge, and the Green Dragon Inn, a fully functioning pub built for visitors after filming. Everything is tended by a team of gardeners so the vegetable patches, flowers, and hedges look permanently lived-in.

Prices are as of September 2026 and rise most years — check the operator when booking. Children under 10 are free but must have a ticket. All tours start from The Shire's Rest at 501 Buckland Road and travel to the set by coach; private vehicles can't go onto the farm.
The standard tour — what happens
A coach ride from The Shire's Rest through the farm (about 10 minutes, with a video of Peter Jackson explaining how the site was found), then a guided walk through the set on a fixed route: up past Bagshot Row, Sam's house, the vegetable gardens, up to Bag End with its view over the Party Field, back down past the lake and the mill, across the bridge, and into the Green Dragon for your drink. Guides are good — they know the films, the construction stories, and where to stand for the photos. You can't wander freely, but there's time at each stop.
Inside a hobbit hole
For twenty years the hobbit holes were facades — the interiors in the films were shot in a Wellington studio. That changed in late 2023 when Hobbiton opened two fully furnished holes on Bagshot Row that every standard tour now walks through: round hallway, kitchen with a range, larder full of jars, a bedroom, a study, all built to hobbit scale. It's the single biggest upgrade the set has had and it makes the ticket price much easier to justify. Bag End remains exterior-only.
The Green Dragon Inn
A fully working pub, built in 2012 in the style of the film set, with a thatched roof, an open fire, and its own Southfarthing range brewed for Hobbiton: Girdley Fine Grain amber ale, Sackville cider, Oatbarton Brew stout, and a non-alcoholic ginger beer. One drink is included with every tour. Sit by the fire for ten minutes before the coach back.
Getting There
From Auckland
Drive SH1 south through Hamilton, then SH1B and SH27 to Matamata — about 2 hours in normal traffic, longer on Friday afternoons and holiday weekends. Day tours from Auckland bundle the coach and the ticket and usually add Waitomo Glowworm Caves, which makes a long but efficient day (10 hours). InterCity buses run Auckland–Matamata (about 3 hours) and the Matamata i-SITE has a shuttle to The Shire's Rest.
From Rotorua
The easiest base. Matamata is an hour northwest of Rotorua on SH5 and SH28. Half-day tours from Rotorua run morning and afternoon. Many people do Hobbiton on the drive between Auckland and Rotorua — it's only a small detour off the direct route.
From Matamata
The Shire's Rest is 10 km south of Matamata town. If you're staying in Matamata (a small farming town with a few motels and the Hobbit-themed i-SITE), tours also depart from the i-SITE on Broadway with a shuttle included.
Beyond Hobbiton: Other Lord of the Rings Locations
Hobbiton is the only permanent set, but the landscapes are all still there. These are the ones worth a detour — in rough order of how much they'll mean to a fan.
Weta Workshop — Wellington
The studio that built the armor, weapons, prosthetics, and creatures for all six films (and Avatar, and much else). Weta Workshop Unleashed is a guided experience through mock film productions showing the craft; the Workshop Tour goes behind the scenes at the real studio. Tongariro National Park — Mount Doom
Mount Ngauruhoe, a near-perfect volcanic cone, was Mount Doom. Mordor's wastes were the surrounding Rangipo Desert and the slopes of Ruapehu. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing — the best one-day walk in New Zealand — passes right beneath Ngauruhoe (climbing the cone itself is discouraged out of respect for its sacred status to local Māori). Base yourself at National Park village or Whakapapa.
Mount Sunday — Edoras
A lone rocky hill in the Rangitata Valley, ringed by the Southern Alps, where the Rohan capital was built (and completely removed). Nothing remains but the hill and the view — which is the point. The drive from Christchurch is 2.5 hours, the last hour on gravel, and a 30-minute walk reaches the summit. Guided tours from Christchurch or Methven bring props and film stills to match up with the landscape.
Glenorchy & Paradise — Isengard, Lothlórien
The head of Lake Wakatipu is the most-filmed area in the South Island: Isengard was the Dart River flats, Lothlórien the beech forest at Paradise, Amon Hen the Kawarau Gorge, and the Misty Mountains the Remarkables above Queenstown. Several operators run half-day and full-day LOTR tours from Queenstown with 4WDs and film stills; the Dart River jet boat and Kayak combos cover the same ground with more adrenaline. Kawarau Gorge — the Pillars of the Kings
The river where the Fellowship paddled past the giant statues of the Argonath (the statues were digital). The Kawarau Bridge, where AJ Hackett runs the original commercial bungy jump, is a few hundred metres upstream. Combine.
Putangirua Pinnacles — Paths of the Dead
Eroded gravel spires in a dry valley near Cape Palliser, where Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli walked into the mountain in The Return of the King. An easy 1.5-hour return walk up a streambed reaches the pinnacles. Combine with a Martinborough wine stop and the Cape Palliser seal colony for a Wellington day trip.
Pelorus River — the barrel scene
Where the dwarves escaped the Elves in barrels in The Desolation of Smaug. A clear, green river through native forest, with swimming holes and a suspension bridge at Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve. Guided kayak trips retrace the route. On the road between Picton and Nelson.
Mount Victoria — the Hobbits' hideout
The "Get off the road!" scene — Frodo and the hobbits hiding from the Black Rider under a tree root — was shot in the pine forest on Mount Victoria, a 15-minute walk from downtown Wellington. The exact spot is near the top of the Wellington Road entrance. Small, quick, and free.
Planning a Middle-earth Trip
North Island route (5–6 days). Auckland → Hobbiton and Waitomo → Rotorua → Tongariro Alpine Crossing → Wellington (Weta, Mount Victoria) → Putangirua Pinnacles day trip → ferry south.
South Island route (5–6 days). Picton → Pelorus River → Christchurch → Mount Sunday (Edoras) → Queenstown → Glenorchy and Paradise → Kawarau Gorge.
Budget. Hobbiton NZ$130. Weta Workshop NZ$55–130. Guided location tours from Queenstown or Christchurch NZ$200–400. Everything else on this list is a free landscape — the cost is the car and the driving. Two weeks doing the lot, with a rental car and mid-range accommodation, runs roughly NZ$5,000–7,000 per person.
