Explore Marlborough

Marlborough makes most of New Zealand’s sauvignon blanc, and the best of its cellar doors sit on flat roads within a few kilometres of each other. A bike is the obvious way around and almost nobody needs to be fit to do it. Three hours of hire is NZ$47.35; a guided morning with a self-guided afternoon is the version most people should book.

The operation

A dozen cellar doors inside three kilometres

The base is The Vines Village at 193 Rapaura Road, which is the single most useful fact about the operation: more than a dozen wineries sit within about three kilometres of it, on flat ground. Almost no time goes on transit, which is what makes a three-hour hire a real wine tour rather than a bike ride with one stop.

The range runs from pure hire to fully guided. Self-guided gets you the bike, a map and the bookings; guided puts someone with you who knows which cellar door is pouring what. The hybrid — guided in the morning, self-guided after lunch — is the one reviewers single out, because it gives you the expertise first and the freedom afterwards. The company is Qualmark Gold, a Carbon Conscious Organisation and a Tiaki Promise signatory, and says it is the only operator running guided biking wine tours in the region.

“More than a dozen wineries within three kilometres of the door.”

Know before you go

Where it starts

The Vines Village, 193 Rapaura Road, with more than a dozen cellar doors inside about three kilometres.

Time is the real constraint

The recurring criticism in reviews is that the day feels rushed — people wanting longer at the wineries, and the scenic river route eating into tasting time. If that matters, take a full day rather than a half.

Not every stop lands

At least one winery on the standard route is described by reviewers as dull next to the others. Ask the guide which ones are pouring well on the day.

Reviews

What guests say

Reviewers praise the flat, easy terrain, the free accommodation pickup and the organisation, and most of all the hybrid format that gives a guide in the morning and freedom after lunch. The recurring complaint is time pressure: not long enough at the wineries, with the scenic river route eating into tasting time, and one stop on the standard route that reviewers find dull next to the rest.
