Editorial spotlight · Nelson Airport
The largest privately owned helicopter company at the top of the South Island, flown by the Darling family out of Nelson Airport. Alpine landings in the Richmond Ranges, beach drops in Abel Tasman, picnics on mountain peaks, and a thirty-minute trial flight where you take the controls. Read the prices carefully: they are per helicopter, not per person.

The operation
Helicopters Nelson describes itself as the largest privately owned helicopter company in the top of the South Island, and it is run by the Darling family from a base at Nelson Airport. Two airframes do most of the work: an MD520N that carries up to three passengers and an AS350 Eurocopter that carries up to six. Both are weight dependent, so the stated capacity is a ceiling rather than a promise.
The important thing about the price list is that almost every flight is sold as a whole helicopter. The ten-minute Nelson Scenic at NZ$836.48 is the cost of the aircraft, so with six aboard it works out around NZ$139 each and with two it is NZ$418 each. The exceptions are the trial flight, which is one person at the dual controls with an instructor, and the heli-hikes, which are quoted per party with a guide. Flights range from ten minutes over the city to a three-national-park day and Lord of the Rings location flights into Mt Owen and Mt Olympus.

The one to book
Ten minutes of flight time in the AS350 over Nelson City, the Maitai Dam, the Coppermine Trail, the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary, Port Nelson, the Boulder Bank and Tasman Bay. The company pitches it as the intro flight for first-timers and nervous flyers, and it is the cheapest way into one of their aircraft.
NZ$836.48 buys the helicopter, not a seat. Fill it with six and the cost per head is about NZ$139; take it as a couple and it is about NZ$418 each. Capacity is weight dependent, so give the office real weights when you book.

Before you go
Almost every flight is sold as the whole aircraft. Divide by the number of people actually flying before you compare it with a per-seat operator.
Both airframes list a maximum number of passengers “weight dependent”. Give the office real weights when you book rather than finding out on the day.
The Nelson Scenic is advertised at ten minutes of flight time. It is an introduction, not a tour.
Scenic flying at the top of the South is weather dependent. Build a spare day in if the flight is the point of the trip.
Reviews
Reviewers name the pilots and praise the commentary, the stories and the willingness to point out landmarks and wildlife. The recurring practical note is that the pricing is per aircraft, which is good value for a full load and expensive for two; several reviews are of the bigger landing flights rather than the ten-minute scenic.
