The operation

An hour from the city, the only colony of its kind

The cruises work the water around Taiaroa Head at the tip of the Otago Peninsula. The headland holds the only mainland breeding colony of northern royal albatross anywhere in the world; the birds have a wingspan of around three metres and the cruise is built around seeing them on the wing rather than from a hide. New Zealand fur seals and sea lions haul out on the rocks below, and Stewart Island shags nest on the cliffs.

Shorter cruises leave from Wellers Rock on the peninsula itself. The longer combinations start in Dunedin and add a coach tour of the peninsula or a visit to Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s only castle, before the boat. Yellow-eyed penguins are wild and come ashore on their own schedule, so sightings are never promised.
