The Whanganui is the only river in the world with the legal personality of a person, and the Whanganui Journey is the one Great Walk you paddle. Owhango Adventures puts you on it for two to five days, self-guided with barrels and a map or fully guided with a crew who tell you whose river it is. From a village base that also shuttles the 42 Traverse and the Tongariro Crossing.

The operation
Owhango sits between Tongariro National Park and the Whanganui, which is why one company can run river journeys, a mountain bike shuttle on the 42 Traverse and a park-and-ride for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing out of the same yard. The river journeys are the main business: two, three, four or five days from Taumarunui or Whakahoro down to Pipiriki, with a free night’s stay at the base thrown in before or after.
There are two very different products here and it is worth knowing which one you are buying. The self-guided journeys hire you the canoe, the barrels and the logistics and send you down the river on your own. The guided journeys put a crew with you, cater the trip and tell the river’s history — reviewers single out the Māori cultural content on these. The guided trips are consistently the better-reviewed of the two.
“One way shuttle service to the start of 42 Traverse… finish back at Owhango Adventures base where your vehicle awaits you.”

Fully guided and catered journeys run from NZ$394.57 for a full day at Nga Huinga to Ohinepane, NZ$710.22 for a two-day cultural journey, and up to NZ$1,657.17 for the multi-day Discovery River Expedition. Te Araroa through-walkers have their own freedom-hire rate from Whakahoro to Whanganui.
Before you go
These are not the same product. The guided journeys are the ones reviewers rate most highly, particularly for the cultural content. The self-guided journeys hire you gear and logistics and leave the rest to you.
Reviews from late 2023 and early 2024 describe unmanned check-in, a run-down bunkhouse and barrels that leaked during a capsize. Later reviews are consistently five-star, so it reads as a fixed period rather than the current state — but confirm check-in arrangements and test your barrels before you launch.
Every canoe journey quotes per paddler on a sliding scale. Two people pay more each than ten do. Book as one party rather than separately.
The Whanganui Journey is a DOC Great Walk and hut or campsite bookings are separate from the canoe hire. Sort both.
Reviews
The guided journeys draw the strongest reviews: guide knowledge, the river’s Māori history, safety briefings and good gear. The shuttles are described as reliable and flexible. The genuine negatives are older and specific to the self-guided product in late 2023 and early 2024 — unmanned check-in, a dirty bunkhouse, leaking barrels and one rude pickup driver — and recent reviews do not repeat them. Sixty reviews is a small sample either way.
