TIME Unlimited Tours

Auckland sits on fifty-odd volcanoes with a black-sand coast an hour west and Hobbiton, Waitomo and Rotorua inside a day’s drive. TIME Unlimited Tours works that ground privately or in small groups, with genuine Māori cultural content rather than a photo stop, and a National Geographic World Legacy Award from 2016 to show it was not an afterthought.

The operation

Operated by Highly-Knowledgeable Guides and Winners of Several Global Tourism Awards

The company is operated by Neill and Ceillhe Sperath out of Auckland and sells two things: small-group scheduled tours with a published per-adult fare, and Private Day and Multi-Day Tours. In 2016 it won the National Geographic World Legacy Award for Sense of Place, presented with ITB Berlin — an award for tourism that reflects the place it happens in rather than flattening it, which is the fairest summary of what the tours actually do.

The Māori content is one of several distinguishing features. The Māori Luxury Tour and its variants contain cultural interpretation through the day rather than a performance bolted onto the end, and reviewers single this out more than any other element. Guides are called host-guides, vehicles are Mercedes, and the private itineraries are genuinely rearranged around what guests want rather than offered as a fixed route.

Named repeatedly by reviewers; Neill and Ceillhe Sperath own the company. It has not yet confirmed which names and roles it wants printed.

Before you go

Know before you go

Small group or private

The published per-adult fares are the scheduled small-group tours. Private tours are priced for the party and the per-head figure drops sharply from one person to five.

Where the cultural content sits

On the Maori Luxury Tour it runs through the whole day, from the Māori names and uses of native plants in the Waitakere Ranges to the lore and legends of the bush. It is the single most praised element in reviews.

Children and infants

Children are half price on the small-group tours. Infants travel free on the private tours.

Reviews

What guests say

Reviewers praise the depth of the guiding and the Māori cultural content above everything else, then the flexibility of the private itineraries and the comfort of the vehicles. The price is premium and reviewers do not treat that as a fault.
